Our Story

Why Pace Academy

Pace Academy was born from a calling—something deeply personal to both of us, and something we feel honored to be building together.

After years of serving in the Marine Corps, Matt saw the lasting impact of purpose, community, and personal growth in the lives of young people. That experience sparked a vision for a school that shapes students from the inside out—not just with knowledge, but with the capacity to grow, lead, and make a meaningful impact in the world.

At the same time, Kristen was on her own journey. During the pandemic, she homeschooled her youngest son and rediscovered the beauty of learning that is slow, meaningful, and filled with wonder. When he returned to a traditional classroom, she saw more clearly how our current systems—though built with good intentions—aren’t always designed to meet the unique needs of every child. Like so many others, her son needed to be known, encouraged, and given the time and space to grow at his own pace.

These experiences led us to ask deeper questions:
What kind of education helps children truly flourish?
What kind of place nurtures both mind and character?

Through those questions—and countless conversations around kitchen tables, front porches, and campfires—Pace Academy began to take shape.

It is intentionally small because we believe children thrive in close-knit, caring communities. It is rooted in strong character, because who a child becomes matters just as much as what they achieve. It honors the natural world, because beauty and wonder are powerful teachers. And above all, it is a place where every child is known, and every family matters.

Even in these early days, we’re filled with joy by what’s already unfolding. We’ve seen children come alive with curiosity, families grow closer through shared purpose, and a community take shape that reflects the values we hold most dear. The growth has been real—sometimes quiet and steady, sometimes bold and surprising—and it reminds us daily why this work matters. We move forward with hope, knowing we’re building something beautiful, meaningful, and lasting.

Sincerely,
Matt & Kristen

  • Kristen Braia: Co-Founder

Kristen's career as a nurse instilled in her a profound appreciation for humanity and a deep-seated desire to help others. When she started her family, she wanted to continue making a positive impact on her community while also being an active and present parent to her children. This led her to found Young Chefs Academy of Richmond in 2006, where children learn the lifelong skill of cooking through an artistic, creative, and fun educational experience. In search of a school that would support her youngest son's entrepreneurial spirit, Kristen and her husband discovered the Acton Academy network of innovative schools. They immediately knew the self-directed learning model was the perfect fit for their family and community. As the leader of the business and development operations at Pace Academy, Kristen works tirelessly to ensure that our mission of empowering learners throughout the greater Richmond area is fulfilled.

Beyond her professional pursuits, she cherishes moments with her husband, two children (ages 14 and 12), and their furry and feathered companions – a dog, two cats, and a parakeet.
