Our Story
As parents, Kristen and I treasure those special moments when we see our children thriving - whether they're leveling up in karate, bouncing back from a tough loss on the field, or making a difference in their community through service projects. We see it in how my son teaches himself a difficult song on his guitar and how Kristen's youngest takes the lead on the basketball court. Through these experiences, we've understood that children flourish when they bring their unique selves and creativity to their learning, overcome challenges, and showcase their hard-won accomplishments.
Though we never set out to open our school, we couldn't ignore the missed opportunities we saw when our children returned to in-person learning after a year of virtual schooling. We had hoped that this unprecedented time would be used to re-evaluate and improve upon the traditional one-size-fits-all curriculum, but that wasn't the case.
We knew that our children deserved more.
After researching different teaching and learning models worldwide, we came across Acton Academy and its unique educational approach. Acton’s learner-driven model genuinely resonated with us, emphasizing children's innate curiosity and talents and teaching essential life skills through real-world projects, so much so that we decided to launch our own Acton affiliate school - Pace Academy.
We truly believe we have found a better way to educate our children. It's our pleasure to spread the word about it to other families who share our vision of revolutionizing education into an experience that enriches not only the children, but also their families, communities, and society as a whole. We are eager to join forces with like-minded individuals and embark on this incredible journey where we can positively impact the world, one child at a time.

Kristen Braia: Co-Founder
Kristen's career as a nurse instilled in her a profound appreciation for humanity and a deep-seated desire to help others. When she started her family, she wanted to continue making a positive impact on her community while also being an active and present parent to her children. This led her to found Young Chefs Academy of Richmond in 2006, where children learn the lifelong skill of cooking through an artistic, creative, and fun educational experience. In search of a school that would support her youngest son's entrepreneurial spirit, Kristen and her husband discovered the Acton Academy network of innovative schools. They immediately knew the self-directed learning model was the perfect fit for their family and community. As the leader of the business and development operations at Pace Academy, Kristen works tirelessly to ensure that our mission of empowering learners throughout the greater Richmond area is fulfilled.
